1989 BMW K 75 C
Summary:
Performs all functions I required from a motorcycle in a exemplary manner, with little drama
Faults:
3 clutch cables.
2 clutches.
1 water pump.
2 rear shocks.
Starter motor clutch/locking gear.
Seat is unbelievably uncomfortable at 100000 miles.
General Comments:
Every time this vehicle broke down (twice), it gave me plenty of notice. It was through my need to keep on the road and working that it finally failed on me. Once with clutch slip while travelling to Scotland (lost ALL drive), and once with water pump failure. I would literally get on the bike and ride it to wherever I wanted to go, with only a tyre pressure, lights and levels check.
Purchased from new for the purpose of dispatching, and price/maintenance being of the utmost importance, it is without doubt the best most reliable motorcycle I have ever owned.
I have owned many sports and screaming strokers that caused me many problems with the police, but I was never, never stopped on the BMW. Saying that though, the K could be pushed around in a fairly sporty manner, and it actually handled better with a full tank of juice.
If you asked me 30 years ago would I ever own a BMW, I would have laughed in your face!
I am now after a 15 year break from motorcycling, actively seeking a BMW R100RT, so I can commute to work, as using a car in traffic is doing my head in!!!
Would you buy another motorcycle from this manufacturer? Yes
