1982 Honda CM450 Custom

Summary:

If you find one, don't buy it, send it my way ;)

Faults:

Burned up the clutch, my fault really, lubed the fulcrum on the clutch lever and reinstalled it too tight.

Read another review that said the rear right signal lamp went out, and it's strange but mine did too. Upon further investigation one of the bullet connectors under the seat was less than tight. Super easy fix.

For 40 years since manufacture and 20 years of sitting (last titled in 91) I'm pretty happy. Old Hondas just want to run.

General Comments:

Cleaned the clutch, brake master cylinder, new tires and battery and that's IT. Super easy bikes to work on.

Nothing so far.

This bike is easy to handle, and is the perfect size for a newer rider like me. As a woman, I feel very comfortable and confident on this bike.

It will get you where you're going

Faults:

Had to replace a fuse holder and rebuild the front brake caliper.

General Comments:

Just what I was looking for when I decided to get back on two wheels after 30 years.

Sporty, cheap to operate and fun to ride.

I was surprised at the parts availability for a bike this age.

1982 Honda CM450 Custom

Summary:

I would buy another one just like it

Faults:

New rear tire every 5000/6000 miles.

Front tire every 15000 miles.

Throttle cable broke twice. I keep a spare one under the seat now.

Tachometer broke at 74000 miles.

New front brake pads at 60000 miles.

Broke an exhaust valve at 44000 miles.

Replaced the chain every 12000 miles.

Recovered the seat.

New spark plugs every 35000 miles.

Change oil and filter every spring.

General Comments:

I bought this bike new in 1984 as a left-over model. I am the only one to ride it and work on it.

It looks like a lot of things have gone wrong, but it has over 77000 miles on it and I have ridden it every day from early May until the end of October every year since I bought it.

Most of the items have been minor and easily fixed. It does seem to be getting a little tired now. Perhaps some new rings would help.

This is one the best mannered motorcycles I have ridden. It has plenty of power to get me in and out of all kinds of trouble. It rarely does anything unexpected.

I can ride comfortably for hours.

It gets 65 miles per gallon.

Starts and runs smooth every time.

Only once has it failed to get me home.

It doesn't leak or use a drop of oil.

I do a full service and inspection every spring before riding.

1982 Honda CM450 Custom

Summary:

This is the best investment I have made in a long time

Faults:

Front tire was dry rotted; cost 50.00 for a new tire.

Needed a battery; 30.00.

Front brake was a little sticky; took it apart and cleaned it up, and it now works great.

One fork seal started leaking at 9100 miles; cost 21.00.

General Comments:

I bought this bike from a friend who bought it new. He put 8700 miles on it in 16 years, then parked it for 9. I paid 800 for it and had it running within an hour, and was riding it the next day. It looks and rides like new, and with every tank my gas mileage goes up.

This bike is a joy to ride on country roads and in town. I do ride it on the freeway everyday to work, but I adjusted my departure time to avoid heavy traffic.

Summary:

A great bike... buy one..

Faults:

No problems so far.

General Comments:

I just got this bike 8-9 days ago due to a minor problem with my left foot. This is the CM450A. It has a semi auto trans. Only hi and a low gear with no clutch. It takes almost no shifting to ride this cycle. I have owned MANY motorcycles (and still do), but shifting has become a problem.

This Honda is a great bike. It is good around town and on the highway as well. This motor is known to run forever, and has plenty of power to keep up with the other traffic.

I thought about a big scooter, but I'm very glad I went this way. If shifting is a problem for you, this is a good cheap way to keep riding.
