1989 Honda NX125

Summary:

Best in its class and then some!

Faults:

Nothing wrong with it... tail light lense/part was hard to find, but not impossible. Most suppliers stated not available. I researched outside the box with other models with the same part numbers and found a replacement. But you'd think that lights would never be discontinued, being a safety part... had to figure out something, because you could probably buy the original molds for less than these eBay sellers want for some used stuff. However that is another good thing with this Honda; some parts are interchangeable.

General Comments:

I think it handles like nearly as well as some 250s; maybe a bit less power, but it's hard to believe it's only 125. I mean when you compare to other cheaper brand model 110s, 125s, 150s, and even 200s, it's better and/or just as good.

The size of bike is decent; could sit a few inches higher for me, but I'm 6'1".

Now they say it's not a huge threat off road, but it handles well... the dual use tires I believe are what keeps it from climbing or getting through mud like a regular dirt bike, but if it had knobbier tires, it would be nearly as good as any bike off road... but essentially this is for tooling around towns or riding light trails. It's sure fun, and the gas it uses is hardly none; it's actually ridiculous how little fuel it uses.

I paid $1200 for it in fairly decent condition for the year, and it was worth every penny... it's a much better choice than some $1400 new China kazuma type enduro that will leave you broken down off the showroom floor. No, this is a well built Honda and it'll run forever if you treat it right.

Only con was it cracked a tail light and couldn't easily find a cheap replacement because this particular part was discontinued or something.

This bike is not for mountain climbing or mudding, but you can handle some stuff good enough. Mainly it's just for lighter stuff roads and trails, but if you're going climbing, you should be up there on a 600 anyhow.

Summation is that the Honda NX125 is definitely top in its class and then some. I'll bet the NX250 is awesome too, but I've not had the opportunity to ride one yet.

Only maintenance I did was it wouldn't idle smooth from years of sitting in storage; cleaned the carb and it was ready to go again.

1989 Honda NX125

Summary:

It's very reliable, but slow acceleration

Faults:

It only needed oil changes and spark plugs

General Comments:

The bike is pretty slow at acceleration, the top speed for me was around 60 mph, pretty good on the highway, but it's a bit of a bumpy ride.

1st gear went to 5 mph.

2nd went to 15.

3rd went to around 30 mph to 35 mph.

4th went to 45mph.

5th went to 55 to 60 - 64 mph.

1989 Honda NX125

Summary:

Reliable and Slow

Faults:

Literally nothing.

General Comments:

Slow top-speed, but it would maintain it for miles. Never had anything break on it. Routine maintenance was simple.

The top speed on this bike was 64 mph on the road. When it got hot from running at this speed for so long, it would drop to 57 mph. It was not too happy on the freeway. At 64 mph, it got 86 miles per gallon. I was going to try and put a smaller sprocket on for more top speed, but it probably wouldn't be worth it.

It was not the best off-road. I got stuck in the mud and had to rock it out a couple of times. On the road it did not accelerate very quickly. The best spot was 3rd gear from 35mph to 45mph, that was the most fun. Oil changes and spark plugs were the only maintenance. Had to buy a special spark plug socket for it.

It was a fun commuter and cheap on insurance.
