2005 BMW R 1150 RT from United States of America

Summary:

BMW means Best Motorcycle in the World!

Faults:

Quite a lot, the fan belt failed, the upper could have failed a few times, the throttle cables had to be replaced, front fork seals, rear shock, final drive seal, drive shaft, one heated grip, headlight adjusting assembly, batteries, oxygen sensor, upper coil connectors, clutch, clutch slave cylinder, etc etc.

General Comments:

With the component failures aside, this was a used police motorcycle so it was ridden hard and put away wet for its short life. So there were some services that came about partially because of its hard life.

But this is my second police motorcycle, it's a great bargain to buy one to begin with, and if you are handy, they are easy to work on. And when it is all fixed up and good to go, be ready and tell your friends and family you will not be interested in them anymore, because all you'll want to do is ride.

This bike is great for rain, hail, heat, cold, etc etc; it's truly an amazing road machine, and it handles corners as amazingly well as it goes in a straight line.

I would recommend one to anyone, but with the caution that it will be spendy if you don't get one that has been regularly properly maintained.

Also I have has some pretty poor experiences with the dealer network (4 dealers so far) in California; they seem to be more parts replacers without a conscience; you can go back 3 times for the same problem and they charge you for everything they do every time, and you leave with the same problem and they leave you with the same arguments 'that may not have fixed your problem, but it was failing anyways so we had to eliminate that as a possible cause'.

2004 BMW R 1150 RT from Australia

Summary:

A wolf in sheep's clothing

Faults:

No faults evident at this time.

General Comments:

This is a supremely comfortable touring machine, with sufficient handling ability to maintain the pace in twisty conditions.

Ergonomics are very comfortable, even two-up, and full days in the saddle leave you tired rather than sore.
