1999 Harley-Davidson FXDX Super Glide Sport from United States of America
Summary:
HD made a great bike, but could have done better with the initial Twin Cam problems
Faults:
Bike was a first year Twin Cam 88 model and had the defective camshaft bearings. I bought the bike on eBay for $9,500 and immediately had Harley of Pensacola replace the camshaft, bearings, and upgrade to the Stage 3A kit with the 95ci TC with the SE204 cam. The bike has run flawlessly ever since and I have done all other services... change the plugs, fluids, and oil filter.
General Comments:
This Harley is the FXDX, Super Glide Sport, and having previously owned both a '97 ZX-11D Ninja and '88 CBR 1000F Hurricane, I can vouch for what a great job Harley did on putting a V-Twin in a sport bike frame.
Overall handling on any roads is more than acceptable for my 52 year old 5'10" 220lb frame. I added the Mustang Seat because the stock seat is very uncomfortable.
Fuel economy is 44mpg average and I am reluctant to go the Stage 3B kit because the bike runs out very well. No leaks anywhere. Fires right up, warms up fast, and runs smooth at all RPMs. The bike is not geared for more than about 70-80mph non-stop cruising.
Would you buy another motorcycle from this manufacturer? Yes

2006 Superglide 88 TC.
At 30 thousand K, the inner cam bearing went; three thousand dollars later had upgraded to 2007 cam plate and SE204 cams.
At 25 thousand K, the inner primary bearing had to be replaced.
Bought the bike brand new, not my first, but disappointed that Harley wasn't as dependable as I thought. Good thing though I contacted head office HD, and had 50 per cent of the inner cam bearing covered, which I was one year after the two year warranty :)

Like this bike a lot, but didn't trust the twincam engine.
So I got the FXD with the reliable Evo engine; runs great, starts at first attempt after 3 months snow.
If I ever get a twincam driven bike, I will replace the chain driven cam for a S&S gear driven set just to be safe.
This chain thing is a weakest link in the design.
