2008 Honda XL700 Transalp from France

Summary:

Very underestimated and a shame it's no longer in production

Faults:

Fuel pump had to be replaced this year at a price of 800 euro. The problem started when the engine was hot and standing still at traffic lights; the motor just cut out.

General Comments:

Superb, very good on the hills, and as I live in the alps, it's the perfect bike. It's quite a tall bike, but with the low seat option, it is OK for my short legs; even though I am on tip toes, the balance is very good. Excellent at low speeds through traffic.

On the motorway, it is lacking another gear at the top end, and sometimes I click up to find it when I have run out of gears!

2008 Honda XL700 Transalp from New Zealand

Summary:

Does just what I expected it would. Honda delivers, yet again

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Good dual-purpose machine, competent on the road and on gravel. But too heavy for any serious off-road stuff.

Gearing was a bit low, but new gearbox sprocket with 1 extra tooth sorted that out.

Very comfortable on longer runs. Handlebar now added raisers means it's easy to stand up over the rough stuff.

Fuel economy a little disappointing, not really any better than the FZ1 thousand I had before.

Sedate and easy going bike, just what I want. 59 HP will do me fine. Keeps the speeding tickets at bay.
