1985 MZ 300 from United Kingdom
Summary:
An ugly piece of junk
Faults:
Gearbox seized up 16000.
General Comments:
Bought for £600 as a cheap run around, but was anything but. On a trip to Dover and back from London, it would not do more than 20mph.
On a trip up the motorway, the gearbox seized up and then freed itself up, and it rattled to a stand still.
Had it picked up by the garage it was bought from a few weeks previously, and told then to keep it for the price of the tow and fault find, it was that embarrassing.
Top speed was 90 on the speedometer. It was an orange colour and is very agricultural. The engine's 30bhp was too much for the gearbox to handle.
Would you buy another motorcycle from this manufacturer? No

Sorry, but I think you were just unlucky. Generally MZ 2-strokes are solid reliable motorcycles, although some of the designs can be very idiosyncratic. I love them!

A lot of MZs were neglected and it sounds like this one had been. Frequent gear oil changes are a must. There are very few recorded problems with the gearbox. Clearly continuing a journey when the bike is only capable of 20mph, and not investigating the cause, is unwise.
