1998 Suzuki VS1400 Intruder from United States of America
Summary:
Better than a Harley any day of the week!
Faults:
When I first bought the bike, it would not engage in gear. As we all know, this is due to the clutch needing to be bled. So after flushing and refilling the master cylinder, I bled the clutch and took the bike for a ride. Simply fabulous!
While not technically a problem, the chrome on the oil cooler lines was shot. I feared the lines might develop a leak, so I replaced them with some used lines I found on eBay. Cheap easy fix. No further issues here.
The front carb had a leak in the boot that connects it to the cylinder. I had to replace that, which again, I found used on eBay. Took about 30 minutes to fix.
Aside from these issues, I have had no further problems with the bike, and I don't even consider these to be problems for Suzuki. It is normal wear and tear.
General Comments:
This bike looks absolutely amazing. The V-Twin engine just fills up the frame and just begs you to jump on for a ride. When you start the bike, you immediately feel a sense of power, and the subsequent roll of the throttle does nothing to disappoint.
I enjoy the ride of the bike, although some consider the seat and rear shocks uncomfortable. I am just not one of those people. I may one day upgrade the shocks, but no need right now. I did however upgrade the front shock springs with Progressive springs. Very good decision. The front handles very well now and it improved the steering of the bike.
The bike is notorious for needing new clutch springs. Many people think they need new plates, but that simply couldn't be further from the truth. The bike can be cured by going over to intruderalert.com and seeking out a fella with the screen name Designer. He can sell you a set of high performance springs and bolts, which will completely cure your clutch problems. Over at Intruder Alert, he is well known and highly recommended.
If you go with an aftermarket exhaust, most people go with Cobra now because they're about the only ones left selling complete exhaust systems for this bike; do yourself a favor and spring for a set of Big City Thunder Monster Baffles for the new pipes. They will replace the stock baffles in the Cobra pipes, and will totally rock your world when you fire it up!
The Intruders are heavily battery dependent. You should definitely consider an AGM battery like the Motobatt. You can also get yourself a Gman battery. More info can be found at Intruderalert.
Overall, I love the 1400 and would definitely buy another one. In fact, I am on the look out for another used one just to have for parts, or to fix and resell. These cruisers are amazing...
