I had the same problem, it may be two things, carb jets may be too big, or air filter may be too constrictive. I installed a K&N filter with +30% better air flow, and the bike's gas mileage went up, as did performance (bike now WANTS to go to redline). They are expensive, but they are cleanable, and you never have to replace it again. If you buy filter, make sure you also buy filter cleaning kit.
I was wondering if you ever figured out what was hurting your fuel economy? I have a 1983 CB1000C, and it is getting poor fuel mileage. Any help would be appreciated.
